I wonder What Makes Them Tick?

Hey, finally got round to playing and finishing your game matt, and im jus completely bowled over. First of all, well done on even finishing the project (id say that sets you aside from about 90% of aspiring game creators) and also for finishing it to such an amazingly high standard (which sets you apart from another 9%)! Honestly, I read those bad comments you linked to (havnt been able to find any myself) and i think that perhaps the reason people are complaining about stupid little things is because the game is so close to a commercial level of quality that when you are playing it you forget its been made by a hobbyist and not a team of professionals. Like others i was constantly amazed at the level of detail the animations went into... i can only imagine how much hassle it took to do that fishing rod animation for example... but i can tell u it was worth it! Your attention to detail sets the game apart, at no time did it feel like a rush job (something which is lacking from a lot of professionally-made games). And i quite liked the little subtle homages to the classics... my personal favourite was when greg started whistling Monkey Island... genius! The music works SO well that you hardly notice it at first, which is perfect. It doesnt distract from the scene, but is still memorable (From now on Ill always think of WMYT anytime i hear 'St James Infirmary'). The artwork is beautiful to look at, i spent ages just admiring each of the scenes, which have obviously been well planned out. And the puzzles... sigh.. it made me feel warm inside to solve some of the more 'out of the box' ones... and i really regret looking at the hints (i wish they wern't so readily available, i have no willpower). For once I didnt get stuck because of bad game design.. i got stuck because the puzzles were cleverer than me. And although i should feel slightly insulted by that... ill let it slide. :) Telltale games could take some tips from you on complicated puzzle design for their sam and max games. You can be extremely proud of yourself for this achievement, even if you never get the chance to make another game in your life you can be proud of this one. Thanks for the entertainment. :D p.s. one thing i think this game could have benefited from was a little bit of public beta -*test*-('")ing... mainly cus then there was a chance i cudv played it earlier :)

woah! Now that's very nice! :) Thank you very much! I was always hoping that classic LEC adventurers like me would like it ... that was the most important goal. It's very good to read that it worked for you! Thanks!! :o

The Polar One- 05-11-2007

Finished. Not too difficult, and I'm pleased to say I did it all without hints. It still had me pausing to scratch my head a couple of times though. Basically, it's fantastic! I could gush, but that would be embarressing. The artwork, music and humour worked so well together. It's got a genuinely beautiful atmosphere. The end product does feel very very professional. And I thought the ending was awesome. In fact, I first thought of it as more of a cliffhanger. But either way, it gave me a shock and it suits the style. I suppose I can see why someone thought sticking Greg in there was annoying, but it made me laugh, and gave it a post-modern feel. It's only like Monkey Island 2 having a hints phoneline in the forest. Or having William Hartnell in it (sort of). And wasn't that Guybrush I saw too? I hope you do something more.

Matt Kempke- 05-11-2007

Or having William Hartnell in it (sort of) I tried to imagine his voice when I wrote the Dr.'s Dialogue. And that's why he's not a professor but "the doctor". True story. :)

Sorry Greg, I must not have seen your post when I responded to Matt's. Some how I skipped over a few of them... Yeah, Matt, I've heard a lot about you as well over time... probably not as much as the you have, since I see Greg a lot more. I think you should feel awesome about how the game turned out. As I said before a lot of the little things made the difference. I even liked how you added jokes that people may not have even noticed (Like the Psychonauts one) because they were received by looking at one thing in a packed room. I hope you aren't taking any criticism (if there is any... haven't looked myself) that the other sites have said. The game was fantastic, and inspires me to make one (if only I could draw at ALL, or create a good story) Props to you my good man.

And BTW they fixed the picture on that one site. And for those of you who are like me.... American.... and don't know who William Hartnell is, he played Dr. Who at one point in time.... no idea which Doctor he was, numberwise. I just happen to know someone will need to explain that to someone else.... not going to name anyone in particular... *cou-greg-gh*

NigeC- 05-11-2007

my first memory of the doctor was Patrick Troughton, but it was Jon Pertwee that i remember most, i dunno after that it kinda lost its edge for me http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Who

SeanCyrusTowel- 05-11-2007

Personally I've heard a lot about The Doctor.... but have only seen a couple of episodes of the new one, and wasn't a huge fan. So, therefore Robert Picardo will be the only true "Doctor" to me

The Lassie website's Legacy page has been updated to include a video-still from the WMYT release party... if anyone is interested.

Matt Kempke- 05-29-2007

I AM interested :) damn it - I wish I had been there. At least via telephone ... As a Thank You to all of you - and because my psychologist says it's a good idea to hang a poster of WMYT on my wall :) - here's the official poster for WHAT MAKES YOU TICK. http://WMYT.deaddog.de/poster1.jpg - Matt

Matt Kempke- 05-30-2007

It's not perfect yet, but I'd appreciate it if you'd have a look at http://wmyt.deaddog.de Walk around, have a look at the behind the scenes section, download the wallpapers and follow a couple of links :) So far ok?

SeanCyrusTowel- 05-30-2007

Matt, I love the site. I like the flash sketches of the walk cycles. I also love the close up of the crab. The room sketches reminds me of a question I had meant to ask earlier, which it actually answed... You said that you separated those two rooms because the angles were too different... I actually think you could have pulled it still... but hey your game ;-) Great website :D

Awesome Site
Excellent website Matt, I especially like the behind the scenes stuff. It's like a DVD with bonus features! Your early sketches are really well done and the commentary gives us good insight into what it took to make the game. The only thing I might add is a URL like www.wmytgame.de that describes the game a bit more. The deaddog thing confused me at first. Overall, great site. Your web authoring skills are as good as your game designing ones. Tucker BTW, I'm visiting Germany next month. Going to be in Grassellenbach for a while. Where are you located?

JohnGreenArt- 05-30-2007

Cool beans! I always like behind the scenes stuff.
