Yeah, a game magazine put the demo on their disc without asking.

I said something, but since it wasn't a US publication I didn't have too much recourse. They acknowledged what they did was wrong, and promised more coverage of the game, which is really the most valuable thing they could offer.

Wow... there is a lot of discussion on this thread since the last time I checked it. And yes, John is absolutely right... I've been delighted by this exposure of Matt's game equal to the degree that I've been pissed off. I think this is fantastic that Matt and our community are getting so much publicity from this, but as John pointed out – this is a freeware game being included as part of a commercial product. Indirectly, they are making money off the title. And yes, it hurts exposure. The reason we tell everyone "Freeware, do not redistribute" is so that everyone has to knock on our door in order to check out this cool thing that we're giving away. The fact that they redistributed the game is the equivalent of building a 10-lane expressway bypass directly past those of us who hope to recruit interest with our free product. But I digress. Sorry for the rant. I guess the deep down heart of the issue here (that really bugs me) is that it's just so unprofessional to grab and publish someone's material without so much as an email or word of notice.

All of you are somehow right I guess. What bothers me most is that I don't think it's professional not to get in touch with the developers. I mean, they are a big game magazine and the only thing they do is go to the site, download it and include it on the disc. If I were paid to review the game / iclude it on the disc i'd try to get in touch with the creators. At least I'd try. It's not complicated, quite quick even I'd say and in the end I guess I would have agreed anyway to put it on the DVD ... it would have been MY decision. And legally much better, too. All this discussion would not have been necessary if only they had tried to write an email. But I'm not going to complain ... we can use the publicity for the upcoming games. Like ND. Or VSCP. Well, we'll take the citrus fruit and make sweet lemonade from it - right? :)
