Trouble publishing movie.
Hi guys, I'm brand new but this program looks very exciting, I'm excited. Anyway, I've started Nige's tutorial but when it comes to publishing the game for the first time nothing happens. I try to open the file lassieas_v081b4_640.swf, as Nige instructs having exported AS and publishing the _data.fla file, my SAFlashPlayer opens, but it doesn't actually open anything. I have been able to open other games made with Lassie though. I'm on a mac. The "last modified" field of the _data.as file is being updated as I export AS, the _data.fla file is still displaying 8 February 2006, however. The lassieas_v081b4_640.swf file's "last modified" is not being updated either, should these files appear modified after I export/publish, respectively? Thanks to anyone for taking the time to read this! Hope to hear from one of you soon, thanks. Best, Ashley.

Hey, welcome! I'm a little confused about the date published scenario that you describe. If you're exporting for AS and the editor is not throwing any fatal errors, then the data file should be updated. It's possible that the editor does not write out meta data file headers... I've never checked the output to see. Open the .AS file and confirm that you're game's data is included. you should be able to recognize object keyword/descriptions in the code, and then you can always review the exported dialogue data at the bottom of the document.

Thanks for the warm welcome! The .as file is updating just fine, I've just looked at the actionscript on the .fla file and see that it simply embeds the .as, great! However, when I double click on the lassieas_v081b4_640.swf file mentioned in Nige's tutorial nothing is happening. In fact, this file's size is zero kb, is this meant to be the case? Is there anything I have to do as I publish my .swf to ensure the data ends up in lassieas_v081b4_640.swf? Perhaps I am just trying to open the wrong file... Thanks again. Ashley.

The data won't end up in the lassieas_v081b4_640.swf, that is just the player. It should load your _data.swf. When you publish, the _data.swf file is the only one that will be changed. When did you download LassieAS? The lassieas_v081b4_640.swf should not be zero kb, so maybe that file's corrupted.

NigeC- 12-02-2007

lassieas_v081b4_640.swf should be around 23kb the only time nothing happens is if the background isn't set, or the start room is wrong in "cast", but you get a compile warning Just out of interest which Flash are you using? another chap on here had similar problems Welcome BTW if your really stuck you could send me the data file or cst, if your just using the tutorial and i could have a look to see what the problem is

Ashley- 12-02-2007

Hurray! The player was corrupt. I had a different one yesterday, but things weren't working so I downloaded EVERYTHING again, that's when I got the zero kb one. I've just dug the old one out of my trash, it was trying to open in flash, rather than the flash player. I've changed that and it works just fine! Thanks guys! Appreciate your help! Hypothetically, if you were working on several projects, how would the player know which one it is meant to be opening? BTW, I'm impressed with how quickly you guys respond, never seen anything like it! Ashley.

NigeC- 12-02-2007

i have a different projects in different folders with an Lassie application in each you can run different projects in the same source, but it'll use the last published data.swf, in the editor it does have an option in config to choose the library path, but the player wont account for it I can't understand why the downloads are getting screwed up, it seems to be happening quite often lately

Ashley- 12-02-2007

You've replied again?! I've had face-to-face conversations slower than this!

NigeC- 12-02-2007

i need to get a life and not trawl forums all day lol

bigmac- 12-02-2007

i need to get a life and not trawl forums all day lol ... but we do enjoy your company!! Tell you what Nige, when I finally make it to Great Brittan you pick a tavern that'll get you out of the house, and beer is on me. That said, I still don't have any immediate plans to go to GB... especially now that the dollar is at an all time low value; I'd have to eat nothing but crackers and tinned beans to afford spending time in your country! ...yep. $2.06 USD = 1 Pound.

Ashley- 12-02-2007

You wouldn't believe how much a tin of beans would cost you over here these days! When I was a boy... Seriously though, I got the game playing fine, but now that I have tried to upload my own characters I'm having further problems! Its reporting that the file has been uploaded successfully, but where the image should appear as a preview in the member library window (or anywhere else for that matter,) there is nothing. Patrick loads up just fine so I must be doing something wrong when creating my characters' .swf, I guess. What are the specifications for creating these? Is there a specific size or anything like that I may have got wrong? BTW, I love that you said tavern! I guess you were aiming to miss "bar" but overshot "pub" a little. Thanks again, Ashley.

bigmac- 12-02-2007

BTW, I love that you said tavern! I guess you were aiming to miss "bar" but overshot "pub" a little. Oh, yes... a pub would be acceptable. They're not common place in the states, which is unfortunate. It's hard to match the warm ambiance of a European pub. And yes, I was aiming to miss "bar". I don't like them. Not to bypass your question, but I'm going to defer this to our active developers. You'll notice in time that I do that a lot... while I built the engine, I've never really used it, so I'd venture to say that our active developers know a lot more about actually using the tool than I. That and the fact that I haven't so much as looked a several of the editor interface screens in over a year. If you want to know how the tool is working under the hood though, I'm the one to ask. Amazing what a skew there is between technical and practical knowledge ;)

JohnGreenArt- 12-02-2007

Did you create the character swf from scratch or use an existing file?

Ashley- 12-03-2007

From scratch, hello. Ashley.

JohnGreenArt- 12-03-2007

If there isn't a _char template for LassieAS, I'd recommend starting with the _char template for LassieDirector (and making the changes needed for it to work in LassieAS.) My project started in Director, and I used the template, but when I swithced to AS I just had to make a few minor changes to the _char file and it worked fine.
