Sorry to change your post title, Todd, but this isn't my game. In the future, please check with me before associating me with an independent project. Normally I wouldn't mind, however in this circumstance I'd prefer to remain off the ballot given potential copyright issues. You are, of course, still welcome to use Lassie and all our community resources for your project though. Best of luck, looks exciting!

Ok
Ok, i only put it there as in most lassie games it says "Greg MacWilliam Presents a John Green Game" Or something like that... Sorry   :(

bigmac- 05-29-2007

NP: I'm just not worried about John Green hitting me with a lawsuit after he associates me with his own game. Fox Broadcasting on the other hand... they make me nervous

They wont give me/us a lawsuit if I/we didn't market it. I just wanted to put your name to show you how much an ispiration you guys have been. also i thought you might wanna be credited for, ya know, creating lassie.

Thanks Todd, much appreciated, TRULY!!! However, don't get too comfortable under that warm blanket of false security. Are you familiar with the Brother Island Legacy? Or the Indiana Jones fan games? They were freeware games by indie developers about... oh, maybe 5 or six years ago... I remember hearing about it while working in The Keys. Regardless, the LEC legal team had made the effort to learn the identity and home addresses of the respective developers, then mail very formal and intimidating cease and desist letters lest they press charges for infringement of copyright.

Legal Stuff
The TV folks call it "diluting the brand". They're afraid people will make clones of their shows and oversaturate the market. Their thinking goes - if people see enough of a brand, they get tired of it. (simple supply and demand). For example, say you have to wait all week to see your favorite episode. Then say you can go online and see a million fan episodes in the meantime (or play a themed adventure game). You might get tired of that genre and not be so enthusiastic about catching the real episodes. This translates to less eyeballs for advertisers, which translates to less money. And if a show looses money, they are going to take legal action. So, even if your intentions are to pay homage to your favorite show, and not generate income - if your game gets enough attention they will shut you down. I agree with Greg, why take the risk?

Keep it Simple
What helped me with my first LASSIE endeavor was to keep it simple. One room, one character, simple plotline. That way you don't get overwhelmed with challenges and give up. You can always build a more complex game later.

NigeC- 05-31-2007

i totally agree with adventureman, start simple.. if i was you.. i'd grab the Lassie tutorial http://pgames.bikelectrix.co.uk/wiki/index.php/Lassie_Tutorial, and do the tutorial, then add your own graphics etc and expand on it, the content of the tutorial is basiclly what you need to do to set up any game i dont have flash if you don't have flash download the trial, it lasts 30 days, if you look around the net you can find flash 2004 for something like $45 new if you can't afford Flash, Adventure maker requires no scripting to make games or Visionaire but aren't free or theres Wintermute.. which looks awesome or good old AGS which are freeware i think i joined here in 2005 and only now do i feel its the right time to try something bigger, i reckon 80% of people never get past the first level when trying to start off on a full game, its just so involved having to do everything

bigmac- 06-03-2007

Hey Nige, that tutorial link is broken. If you get it resolved, I'd like to have a look. i knew you were making one, but I've never seen it finished. That's the kind of thing that I'd love to get up on the Lassie website.

I'm So Kind: Remove the ',' http://pgames.bikelectrix.co.uk/wiki/index.php/Lassie_Tutorial

if you want to setup one on your website.. i'll tranfer what there is .. unless you want to do your own.. it makes more sense for one to be on your site m8 well spotted Todd
