Some German adventures
For Matt really, Have you seen these Visionaire adventure games? http://www.visionaire2d.net/modules.php?name=VisDownload&op=games "Sherman Toothrot" caught my eye for obvious reasons lol and Captain Delta and the source of argos" has some great animation, but alas my German is limited to "Sprechen Sie Englisch?" i'm pretty much bolloxed after that!

This looks good! Visionnaire is actually a game engine, and the games you mentioned above, Nige, were developed with it. As far as I can see, there is a freeware version with almost all features available. If you're willing to shell out 20 Euro, the full version allows you to compile the entire game into an .exe file to protect your game assets from the players and other Visionnaire developers. They don't exactly specify in which file format the game is compiled with the free version. It was the "Flash swf" compatibility part I particularly enjoyed with Lassie. The full version also comes with a particle system that lets you create cool smoke, fire, rain and wind effects! I'll give those demos a try later. If they're convincing enough I might see what this engine is worth. Thanks for posting, Nige!

I've heard its very easy to use.. i looked at it quite a while ago, but at the time the docs where a bit hard to follow as the translation to English wasn't very good, its a lot better now, its runs high res a lump faster than AGS and looks a lot easier to program with Saying all that I'll stick with Lassie and Flash animation its just so much more controlable Karen from this forum is trying to convince the Visionaire makers to include SWF support, Adventure Maker has a Flash plugin but its very limited so i'm told, you can't advance frames etc its more or less a simple flash hotspot/button

Thanks Nige! Well, I had already played two of those games ... and didn't know they were made with the same engine. I think Captain Brawe looks really outstanding. The Whispered Word was actually a quite famous even in the english adventure game circles, but seems they stopped developing it. I was always curious what the game would be like because the screeshots looked very well drawn. Well ... not quite my cup of tea actually. too many clowns :) The engine seems to be really good! Of course I'll stick to Lassie :)
