Secret Of Monkey Island Remake
Hey I came across this guy's post on the International House of Mojo forum, hes wanting help to remake MI 1 (http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=179489) Whats really cool is that he's already recreated a lot of the Melee Island Scenes in 3d... take a look here http://www.3dspacek.webz.cz/3dgallery.html

 Wow.... those are Brilliant!!! Too bad even if someone tried to make a remake, it'd be shut down in seconds (Now the Fedichini Brothers Music is stuck in my head)

OMG... those are phenomenal. I was actually a little taken aback at first glance given that they're framed and lit identically to the original so don't bring a whole lot of "new" factor to the table. But then it occurred to me that that IS what is so brilliant about them: they are absolutely true to the original game! That street scene with the lamp lights is very nice. The other street scene looking toward the Gov's mansion looks almost like it COULD be the original at first glance. I'm not comparing it side by side, but I suspect that the rock formations in the cliff are even accurate!

Hey guys, I saw those screenshots some months ago and liked them, too. BUT I have to say that - and that's just a personal taste of mine (we don't need to argue like these kids on the thread you linked there) - BUT I have to say that I prefer drawings. And if you use 3D then you have to work hard to make things look worn out and old ... or interesting at all. For example: the fettucini-circus-glowing is great, but the shop from Melee looks like it was built yesterday. All wooden boards and tiles look like they were just unwrapped ... same goes for the town. In that respect 3D needs a lot of detailed work to look interesting ... simple texture and lighting won't do. BAD: http://www.ekho.com/LAYOUTS_CD/image-files/SHED_17a.jpg GOOD: http://www.liquiddevelopment.com/services/Objects/Objects/Shed01.jpg Maybe the guy is a little too straightforward for me ;) Can somebody help me with MI 1 remake? I am very good background artist and I need character artists and programmers....thank you ... COULD be great. If they invest time AND don't just rebuild it in 3D but give it its very own deepness. Otherwise it might just look like the "3D version of MI1" and not "MI with an exciting additional visual deepness and mood". Imagine the circus tent moving softly in the wind ... the rustling of the nearby trees and just the faint sounds of music from within the circus, shadows moving. SIGH. :) http://www.highend3d.com/gallery/391.html (That took the artist 1.5 months ... that's where 3D becomes intersting AND amazing, visually - not time wise) PS: The "comic version" of 3D (Sam and Max, MI4 etc) is ok, but visually not very intersting for me. You can make it fast because it's not supposed to look real - but actually you have to come up with more to make it cool. Like the really cool Psychonauts that had textures and an artistic design. If it's real 3D generated by the engine then you have to reduce details to make it work (Sam & Max). For MI4 the backgrounds were pre-rendered and still looked like smurf-village with reduced textures and details ... I never understood that. Resident Evil for the Cube had pre-rendered backgrounds that were unbelievable beautiful AND animated in detail (like a movie) ... that's how you should use static 3D today even if you use a less realistic and more abstract style.

All that was just philosophy ... A non-commercial game with not that detailed 3D can be great, especially if there's a cool visual style involved like with Niges new designs. The combination of 3D and photographs like in something amiss can obviously be very cool, too. I didn't want to say 3D is bad. I just paid money for games that did use it in a way i did not like :)

Yeh that thread I linked to got really silly really fast! I was cringing reading it... I actually think he was looking for a painter because he wanted CMI-style backgrounds, but to be honest im just so taken in by his renders (and yes im sure there are ways they cud b better but u hav 2 admite theyr well done) that I think they could work. I thought MI4 was ghastly looking, especially compared to CMI, it just looked so rough for no good reason. But Grim Fandango used 3d backgrounds, and succeeded. Actually, while I loved CMI's style, I dont know if it would have suited the Ron Gilbert games, I always thought that their style wasnt quite so cartoony, and so I think a 3D representation (of the standard seen in those screens) would be great. He shoul definatey include the 'inser disk #563' (or whatever) gag.

Matt Kempke- 08-12-2007

I think you're right about the style ...

SeanCyrusTowel- 08-12-2007

I do get what you're saying though Matt... and maybe thats what I didn't like about MI4.... there wasn't anything interesting in the backgrounds.... Then again it may be that the game just sucked :-). But little interesting things in the background would have added to the experience. I also think that Insert Disk joke was lost on those who played the CD version. I originally played the floppy version, then mostly the CD any time I played it after that, and I can't place where the joke is..... I just remember it being there.

(pops up from Nowhere) I agree too; Gilbert's games had that style of humour that gets even better in contrast with a "realistic" visual style. Still, the art direction of CoMI is absolutely fantastic in almost every possible way, from character design to general atmosphere. Speaking of the remake effort, I think that actually none of the LucasArts adventure games really need that bad a makeover; the LucasGuys took visual design very seriously even in their early days, and almost all the games look spot-on the way they do, even if you are not a retro-geek. In other words, good 2d graphics will probably never look bad, but 3d is another story; it's really difficult to create 3d that won't look like crap in a few years, specially if you're aiming at realism, like our fellow remaker here. About Escape from Monkey Island , I never really thought it sucked that much, but it really was just too dull and uninspired in comparison with the first three chapters.

I thought MI4 was ghastly looking, especially compared to CMI, it just looked so rough for no good reason. But Grim Fandango used 3d backgrounds, and succeeded. Good grief yes, on both counts! Grim Fandango was simply amazing in every aspect. But as for MI4?!? It seemed that they were flying by the seat of the pants having forgotten the first step of coming up with a compelling game concept and story, then they staffed their art department with technicians designing scenes with pueblo blocks. And let's not forget the blaasé characters with lack-luster personality. I was rather disappointed that MI4 didn't introduce and new crazy, memorable characters. in fact, I can barely remember the ones that they did introduce. I just remember that they killed the entire cool factor that Murray had going for him by giving him a lame-o role as a door greeter. Oie... It really was an unpleasant game in most every respect that the adventure genre has. Okay, I'm done. Sorry. And I also agree with Matt – I still will always prefer illustrated scenes to 3D.

Matt Kempke- 08-12-2007

Hey Dodo! Welcome! You said much better what I tried to express :) Good visual support by the way :)

fatbuoy1- 08-12-2007

The only thing Monkey-Islandish about MI4 was the names.... everything else jus felt wrong. Its not that it wasnt funy sometimes, but it just felt... wrong. They changed things that worked in CMI for no reason, like the graphics, and Elaines voice... etc.

JohnGreenArt- 08-21-2007

I'd rather see a CMI style remake of MI1 than a 3D remake.
