Night of the Hermit, Lassie edition
I wasn't going to mention much about the game until i had a lot more to show, BUT rather than starting various threads, i decided to isolate it to one topic :D I know remakes are a bit old hack, but I'm cr*p at story writing and nostalgia kicked in  General low down the game was originally by Roy Lazarovich, it worth checking his site, he's done some awesome animations since http://roylazarovich.freespaces.com/ I have his consent, and I've got pretty much a free hand in how the game will looks. The Plot It has now been 8 years since that pesky Guybrush left the Island. Herman has spent all of the money that he earned from that game, and things have started looking pretty bleak. Then one day a message in a bottle shows up, saying that his grandfather has died and left him his big mansion on Badger Island, somewhere in the Caribbean. So with visions of starting a new life, Herman packs his few belongings and sets out to claim his inheritance. But the thing about bottle mail is that it's slow, very slow. So by the time Herman gets to Badger Island, he finds that someone claimed the mansion years ago, and turned it into the sleazy Crippled Badger Motel. Herman decides to spend everything that he has left (which is 12 dollars, 45 cents, and some moss) for one night at the motel, determined to find a way to reclaim what is rightfully his. And this is his story My Problems the big issue is the original game was 320x200 with a MI style GUI, and huge scrolling rooms at least 75% of the rooms scroll sideways http://www.nigecstudios.co.uk/hall1.jpg original image enlarged plan A was to use 1720x480 using a mega wide lense in 3D studio max, the problem is the character ends up being very large and a lot of clicking to make the scene scroll, TBH i don't like 3D max very much and can't justify the expense to buy it just for the wide angle camera! http://www.nigecstudios.co.uk/images/room.jpg Plan B was a more sensible 800x480 solves the character size and scrolling problem but i end up with a dead area http://www.nigecstudios.co.uk/images/hall2.jpg for some reason it looks to dark! I still need to play with the lighting etc Anyhoo the plan is a 3 room demo which will feature one of the puzzles, 2 characters Heres a none scrolling draft image

12 dollars, 45 cents, and some moss eh? sounds true enough to monkey island. As for your mega-wide-lens problems... I think I have the solution to that as I have a copy of max! So if your interested, and PB3D dosent kill me, I'll see what I can do if you want some renders.

NigeC- 11-09-2007

Thanks for the offer :D I general struggled with 3ds max i keep trying it again on a yearly basis but always cop out back to what i know , textures where getting screwed up, i couldn't get the toon rendering right, I just don't have the time to start learning how to use new software!

Shofixti- 11-09-2007

sure, just make whatever you want in whatever software you want, export to some standard format, and I'll just render it in max.

fatbuoy1- 11-09-2007

your problem with filling the dead area in Plan B could be solved by putting in foreground objects, like the silhouette of a table with a lamp or something. Visually, a compoisition with a foreground, middle ground and background tends to be stronger.

NigeC- 11-10-2007

good idea :D I've altered the camera angle and i lose a bit more of the ground, i might drag it to 1024 and lose a lot more

NigeC- 11-12-2007

OK.. yet another opinion time! I'm thinking about pulling away from the bright, simple, colorful style of the original game and going more toward detail and pastel colours, this in turn would give me a lot more control over the games general layout, it would also make the game more my own Do you reckon it would be to much of a change, Lucas Arts got away with it over the series soo your choice is: the new concept art or the old draft

Shofixti- 11-12-2007

As much as I hate cell shaded graphics, Of course I'll have to say the top example is better.

bigmac- 11-12-2007

Nige, where the heck are you getting 3D models of Monkey Island graphics?!? Yes, the first one is way better. I really dislike garish color pallets like the second... they look very amateurish.

NigeC- 11-12-2007

thanks.. It is based on the MI4 mansion: In the Night of the Hermit story he inherits the mansion, but by time he gets the message in the bottle, it has been turned into a hotel... the story is set between MI1 and 2 TBH i was just trying quickly to recreate it, if its the way to go then i'll spend a lot more time obviously lol IT WONT be a 3D Herman! promise!

SeanCyrusTowel- 11-12-2007

You know I looked at that one picture ("the new concept art")and the first thing that popped into my head, "it's the door to our bedroom, Awe yeah!" obviously I was right :-)

NigeC- 11-12-2007

I borrowed MI4..(despite Greg's warnings!) and I have to admit i just did enough to get inside the mansion, and i doubt I'll go much further, blow me the controls, the walk speed etc really got on my nerves! I actually borrowed the game because it's coded with LUA, the scripting language Awakening uses, i was interested in seeing how the player controlled the game and how the adventure interface was done

fatbuoy1- 11-12-2007

how the player controlled the game and how the adventure interface was done badly

NigeC- 11-13-2007

I took out the heavy textures and added a few more bits n piece, the counter is to be a lot more detailed

bigmac- 11-13-2007

"how the player controlled the game and how the adventure interface was done" badly I agree, although I was surprised by that because I thought they built it with GRIMe... and I don't remember having any objections or discomfort with the Grim Fandango control system. I'll admit that I still prefer point-and-click over keyboard control, but that doesn't put even a speck of tarnish on the greatness of Grim Fandango in my mind. Maybe this comes back to the age old truth that the most important part of the game is its storytelling, everything else is secondary. And as far as story goes, I'd rank GF second to none.
