I think the core base was LUA for both games, they just give it a fancy name once the engine is sorted  Oh, i have the go ahead to use the new style graphics :D I bet the AGSers will hate it, but why remake a direct copy, I'll get slammed because "Roy did that bit better" either way

fatbuoy1- 11-13-2007

Personally, I don't really like the way all the AGS games use the old-style graphics anyway. Im not saying some games wouldn't suit a retro look, but for the most part, why? Of course maybe its an engine restriction and i'm just showing my ignorance.

NigeC- 11-13-2007

The engine is capable of more, but for some bazaar reason its pixel art or nothing.. or so it seems I just can't do it! its flat and boring and i find myself looking for ways to make it pop more.. hence the new scene

fatbuoy1- 11-13-2007

Yeh.. i mean im not saying I dont like that look in the right place... but its almost like they think because it LOOKS like MI1 and 2 then it makes d game better. I dunno... Don't get me wrong, theres been some great games made in AGS, like the Apprentice series (which used pixel art).

NigeC- 11-14-2007

I like a lot of the AGS games, BUT making 90's style games limits the audience your likely to attract , very few AGS games where popular outside the community. Maybe I'm just bitter n twisted, I tried new things there back in 2002/03 and got slatted because it wasn't retro, for me the forums are full of experts who have never done a game, coded or drawn anything EXPERT= (EX) (SPURT) EX-- A HAS BEEN SPURT- A DRIP UNDER PRESSURE

fatbuoy1- 11-14-2007

Haha yup, ur bitter and twisted :D But it sounds like you have a reason to be. Whats the point in doing whats been done before? The 'classics' always tried to do something new, or at least do it better. The non-classics were the ones that just did what had always been done, and became stale because of it. Thats my exspurt opinion :D

bigmac- 11-14-2007

Wait, wait... they were shunning games that didn't look like something out of 1993? Good grief – talk about being stuck in the past. We need to move this genre forward into the future, not leave it as archaic technology of a stale vintage. The classics are classics for a reason; because they're CLASSIC. You can't make a game in 2007 that looks like Maniac Mansion and just call it a classic. At least, that's my perspective. Thanks for coming over to join us Nige, we're happy to have you here helping move adventure gaming forward.

When i was active there a Aussie guy called Danny did a game called Norman Cook, all 3D rendered images, his own GUI system, it was really well presented and easy to play, maybe a tad easy and a few bugs, but it was the guys first attempt, for me it was inspiration, but for a lot of the others, they just picked on the faults and the horrible, modern 3D I can not draw on PC's to save my life, i can draw pen and paper but can i hell fix it up once its on a computer lol, using 3D software seems a good solution for people like me Thank you for staring Lassie Greg, I'm here for the long haul lol, You never know NOTH might be the first game with the next generation Lassie  The Bar:

Well the only AGS games I ever really played and finished were the Apprentice games, by Herculean Effort. They used the retro graphics, but were great games in every other respect so it was forgivable, and the retro graphics were well done. Its funny you mention Maniac Mansion Greg, I was playing it using ScummVM the other day (which had a bit of Anti-aliasing) and was surprised at how well the graphics held up. If the game had been made with flash-style vector graphics (which I think the art style would have leant itself to) instead of pixels, I think it would still look as fresh as ever. I don't understand why people seem to have given up on using 2D cartoons for games. The professionals want to use 3D just for the sake of it, not because it looks better. The concept sketches for these games always look better than the actual games! And the amateurs (AGS especially) want to use retro because it reminds them of the old days. And yet, in my opinion, CMI is still one of the most beautiful games graphically, and amateur games that use that style (like WMYT and ND) are the ones that stand out visually. And thats why Lassie is such a stroke of sheer genius Greg! A game made now using scaleable vector graphics isnt going to have visually aged a day in 10 years time (well, by then we may be using holograms ;)), just like old bugs bunny cartoons still look pretty fresh nowadays.

bigmac- 11-15-2007

 I really didn't have any grand scheme for cutting edge graphics in mind. I just picked up on an amazing platform (Flash) since I thought it remarkable that no one else had gone down that road yet. And look where it led... I now do it professionally! Lassie is in no small way responsible for that.

bigmac- 11-15-2007

And Nige... I still don't understand. Where are these 3D models coming from? Are YOU modeling those? Because the do look remarkable like those in EfMI.

NigeC- 11-15-2007

I am modeling them, theres nothing from the MI4 game just a screen capture of the general layout.. the only thing I've "stolen" was the texture for the Lobby's wallpaper, which i plan to change as its only a small portion of the actual design Its mind blowing how easy it is, it took me longer to copy NOTH's original style graphics The hardest part is getting the lighting right, which i haven't mastered as yet, toon shader's react differently I'm starting on the hallway leading to the bar, which won't be based on a room in MI4, so we'll see how much I've relied on the screen captures to get the effect

Amen! Nice graphics Nige!

NigeC- 11-16-2007

Thanks Matt... the guy you pointed towards Lassie, is helping me with characters:wink: Heres the almost finished bar scene, i still need to sort out the foreground.. can you see the drip from the fallen tankard? http://www.nigecstudios.co.uk/images/scummbar.swf

fatbuoy1- 11-16-2007

Yep can see the drip. The scene looks nice, the animations really help add life to it. As for the foreground, I really like the way Maniac Mansion did it, with dark silhoettes of objects... it might look cool if the sword and the beam were like that?
