Newsletter? Hey bigmac,
I was wondering, that a newsletter for the lassie-site would be quite nice... :)
What do you think?
greets,
Darth.

I would definately agree, however I'm not familiar with any newsletter services. If you have any pointers, that would be great.
My only other reserve about a newsletter is that I only have so much time to devote to the Lassie project (very little as of late), and I find PR to be distracting from major project work time. I put a post into the help wanted section a while ago looking for "staff" writers, hoping that maybe interested developers would be willing to generate some buzz. The offer still stands!
As for a newsletter though: if I found a good, free service that I could quickly and easily send out a mailings with and subscribers could add and remove themselves from, then I'd consider it.

Oh, then I missed that one...

Ok, I'll do some researching for you, asap. :)

hey, thanks!

besides, did you use a CMS for the LASSIE homepage?
Maybe there's a newsletter plugin for the CMS you are using... ;)

CMS? Wow, I may sound like an ignorant multimedia designer, but I don't know what that is. I built the Lassie homepage using basic PHP.

Ok sorry... that's the curse when you study computer science and start talking without aksing if the other know what the heck you're talking about... ;)
CMS stands for Content Management System.
I found something that might just be the right thing for you:
http://www.selfexile.com/projects/opennewsletter/
It's quite simple and I think with a little effort we could adjust it to look like and fit into the LASSIE website. It only requires a webserver that understands php, as far as I understood it.
And the best: it's Open Source (GPL)! :)
Here's an online demo to play around with:

What do you think? :)

Arg... server must be down. The website isn't coming up for me. I'll try the link again tomorrow. That would be cool though if it's a local system that doesn't require a third-party to host. And yes, I have a PHP enabled server. Thanks for finding this!

okay... it came up. Looks cool, I'm downloading it now and will have a look!
I can't say when I get around to implementing it and trying it though. I'm pretty busy at the moment with other projects that (sadly) take priority over hobby stuff.

Wow, this thing looks sweet! Great find there, Darth. Give me a hand -*test*-('")ing it, go to:
http://www.lassieadventurestudio.com/subscribe.php
I'll send out some -*test*-('") blasts tomorrow, and we'll make sure that users can unsubscribe themselves.

no prob, took me only a search of about 5 mins on sourceforge.net! 8)
ok I entered my email address, if it works, I could install&configure it and fit it into the LASSIE website if you give me access to your server, if that helps... :)

I've got it covered... I'll add it to the website after I get a chance to research PHP cookies (will set cookie and only display subscribe option to unregistered users). Overall, it'll give me a chance to do some more experimenting with PHP, which is good. I learn a lot when I have a specific goal that I'm trying to accomplish.

ok, if you need help on that, just ask... ;)
