Lassie goes "Myst"
Here is the foundations of one of the next Lassie games in the makings.. what we have here are "rooms" that turn 90 degrees and animated turn (click the left or right of the screen) It takes a while to load each room, sorry i used max quaility jpgs  each room has images at 22.5 degree intervals coding wise.. it uses phases to control which direction you face after you leave a room. the flash movie turns via hidden buttons and hotspot buttons to change rooms with AS calling TIMes and which phase to set the next background to, i could have turn left or right cursors using inventory cursors but it seems hardly necessary UNlike true panning engines, ie SCream you can have animation in turning rooms, plus it wont make you feel sick! theres a lot more going on.. i'll explain more once it works! http://nigecstudios.co.uk/games/hw2/ I tried this ages ago, but i did it using TIMes and phases and it didn't really work very well

Impressive! How many jpgs does it take to make 1 360 degree room?

bigmac- 02-25-2008

How the heck did you do that?

NigeC- 02-25-2008

each room has 16 images i have images called 1,2,3,4 those are front, right , back, left then images 1a,1b,1c are the 22.5, 45, 67.5 turns right and so on for the rest i did the right turns first on one layer then at the end of that started another layer with the frames reversed.. i guess the best way to explain it is with the fla lol an new room is just a matter of overwriting the images in the library and modifying the hot links its probably a bit rough and ready but ITS ALL my own work lol, no tuts or demos help me with it to get animation i just add another layer.. http://nigecstudios.co.uk/games/room1.rar

Well you sneaky dog... you're running timeline animations with phases, aren't you? Geeze Nige, you never cease to amaze me. And that said, I now dub that as a title of honor here in our community: "Sneaky Dog": noun def: Title of honor for Lassie developers who come up with clever tricks and workarounds for creating game scenarios that fall outside the scope of the engine.

phases are used to control the re enter image view as you enter a room, the turn is done by buttons with blend set as erase in Lassie the background is a sprite set ambient so the buttons work like myst switches and puzzles will be on a single image, but i can do it turning sprites off as the room turns thanks for the new title! :D

any way of getting 'sneaky dog' to come up instead of 'forum elder' for Nige?

NigeC- 02-25-2008

i can change my avatar lol

mbuck- 02-25-2008

nige this is really cool. i won't pretend to understand exactly how it works yet but it is very impressive. nice job.

NigeC- 02-26-2008

thanks :D If anyone wants to use it, i'll do a template project and docs i now have the room.swf down to around 600kb.. which is a lump less than the over 3 meg for original lol

fatbuoy1- 02-26-2008

is it big because you had the jpegs bigger than they needed to be, or is it just because theres so many images?

NigeC- 02-26-2008

originally they where rendered max quality from Bryce, it was setup to render cubic room images.. they are now optimized at 47 kb. before they where 470 ish each the game i'm building wont be playable online so file sizes aren't a big concern plus there is the 640 x 480 option if it was an online game, my room template only needs 3 things altering to get it to 640

mbuck- 02-27-2008

Maybe a stupid question here Nige but couldn't you make a camera animation in the 3d program you are using that just turns the camera 90 degrees and run it forward or backwards depending on which way you are turning?

NigeC- 02-27-2008

yes probably.. although Truespace you have to turn the camera manually as you setup the animation.. dunno if Bryce would do it automatically.. i have probs running 3D studio etc, plus i can't afford them lol both do panoramic but that image looks bloody aweful without a pano player,, then i loose animation and lassie control is a lot harder right now i can get animated sky :) all the panning games have limitation, most can't do complexed animation, if i can get working what they lack i've achieved something  slightly off turns is nothing lol i could have the room turn and stop anywhere but it mean a lot of work placing hotspots, tbh most people start suffering from the vertigo feeling in true panning games

really cool! When you turn around outside it's really a "free" feeling ... and I guess if you do your own handyman wanted then you can do a lot of cool "corner of the eye"-horror (which you mentioned) with that "turning around" concept. Like hearing a noise behind you or just seeing a ghost for a second while turning around. impressive, nige!
