Geeze, at this rate I'm gonna have to leap-frog the link between a few free file hosts for a few days until the wave dies down. For those of you who've been here, how long does it last?

Oh crap, seems that the WMYT interest is propagating downloads of the ND demo and Building a Robot... which isn't helping. Curse you Matt for your wonderful game that everyone wants to download all at once!! =P (kidding, of course!)

its hard to say but i was avaraging 2gb+ a day.. my hosting was only 10gb a month, so my site was dead after 5 days lol that game was only 3meg not 30 its really flattering but it just gets insane dunnit

Not to scare you Greg, but in April (when I released chapter two) I had 1,500 GB of transfer or around 50GB per day. Things have calmed down but it took a month to stabilize (now its around 15-20GB per day). Now, Something Amiss is only half the size of WMYT and once word gets out I think WMYT is going to be much more popular. So you're going to be doing a lot of leapfrogging to keep ahead of that bandwidth draw! The price of popularity.

Careful of those unlimited plans. If you read a lot of their 'Terms of Service' you'll find that there's some catch to most of them. I was about to sign with one and then I read in very small print that to qualify most of your bandwidth drain had to be due to HTML pages not images, movies, sound, or flash files. Since most of my BW is from flash files and jpgs, they would've voided my unlimited status and charged me crazy overage fees. If you find a true unlimited provider let me know. I looked for a while and couldn't spot any without catches like that.

a friend of mine was caught out, he'd been with the server for years, payed by direct debt and got complacent with the monthly email billing, he didn't realise he'd been charged $145 a month for exceeding his bandwidth and it was just a slight over flow over a 6 month period, its just 2 forums and images he uses the host for

yeah, hence the reason I'm playing it safe with these free-hosts currently that don't even require a valid email address. The only penalty for bandwidth capacity is that your file becomes unavailable. Thankfully, we're a little slower today. The game has only consumed 28GB in the past 24 hours, 8GB of which was sucked out in the first 3 hours... that was the period during which I was sweating bullets.
