Great Escape!
Great escape is a single room LASSIE game, in which the player has to.. as the title suggests... escape!
after a drunken night out, a dumb dare to climb up a drain pipe, you crash through the sky light of dodgy mike's garage... anyone who knows dodgy mike will know he shoots trespasses an shoots survivors twice!
the player has to search around the garage collecting bits and pieces to aid his escape

Hey, this sounds like fun! Cool!
NigeC- 01-01-2006
thanks :D
i've resized the room so theres less roof and to scale now, i'll get the char sorted today hopefully
the plan is to do a beta version so you guys can see if the idea works, if it does i'll refine it, with animation ie intro, cut scenes and its ending
i'll update the images in the original thread as things progress

Hey, great idea!! There is something to be said for taking on small projects... they are easier to polish to their full shining potential, plus they stand a much better chance of getting finished. Looking forward to seeing more!
BTW, Paranoia: Sorry, I wasn't ignoring your request to pull the Gizzard's Quest thread. I was home for the holidays and my internet connection was seemingly limited to one http call every five minutes. Slooooooow to say the least, so I gave up on forum monitering for the holidays. :(

no worries m8... i saw in other threads you had a slow connection and it was the holidays to
been there, done that with slow connections, its sooo annoying! my biggest problem here is i have to fight off 3 teenage daughters and the wife for computer time! we need 3 more pc's lol :?

What sort of modeling and rendering tool are you using to create your screens? Is it fairly easy to use? Some of the other modelers I have tried have a significant learning curve...

It appears to be either Truespace or Gamespace from Caligari.
NigeC- 01-03-2006
i use truespace 3.2, which you could get free from Caligari, heres a link http://forms.caligari.com/forms/ts3all_free.html and is very easy to use but its a lot different from 3d studio max etc, "blender" http://blender.org/cms/Home.2.0.html is open source i hear its pretty good, a few friends from my 3d gamestudio days used milkshape with fantastic results
i've used truespace for a long time and keep going back to it because its so quick to model with , its a bit twitchy at times with windows XP but ideal for computers with cr*ppy graphics cards or which are a bit slow... like ours lol
NigeC- 01-10-2006
heres the main character, created with poser.. he's actually one of the poser models, but i'd rather use him for now to make sure it looks right, i'll do my own when i'm sure it works
BIG problem is i get random white pixels around his outline, probably because i resized his images.. but i've got him walking and standing in the game, i'll add some screen shots once i get his white halo sorted out and his talk animation

Sounds like your frames have anti-aliased edges. I don't know if you are trying to remove the backgrounds in flash or not, but if so, it works far better to remove the background in photoshop then save the frames out as GIFs or PNGs. With PNG you can have an 8-bit anti-aliased edge, but of course the file size is larger. I usually lean toward aliasing the edge. Look into your 3D package, there's a good chance that it will render objects with aliased edges (at which time you can select, delete, save, and you're done!). If not, there is a quick and dirty method of aliasing edges...
In photoshop, turn anti-aliasing off for the wand tool, then use it to select the background. To clip off the 'halo' you mentioned, use Select > Expand, then grow the selection by one or two pixels so that when you delete the background, it clips flush into the image without the remains of that aliasing outline.
The character looks cool, even if it is stock!
NigeC- 01-10-2006
yes it is down to anti alias, i have to export the images from poser, then make the background transparent, i've been using paintshop pro.. well animation shop which seems to screw things up, i'll have a look tomorrow and see if i can turn the anti alias off in poser or if poser will do transparent backgrounds
i saved the images as gif's in animation shop and the images seemed to breakdown , i'll try png
NigeC- 01-11-2006
almost got it lol, edited the poser image in PSP with a pink background, used the "magic wand" tool with no feathering and saved it as a .png
apart from some coloration on his trousers its getting better
why pink? it seemed to work with AGS dunno why
i'll alter the lighting on his left hand side so its not so bright next and sort the trousers
NigeC- 01-12-2006
Hats off to you bigmac, lassie is awesome!
i can't believe how easy it is to do inventory interacting etc.. i've mentioned before i used AGS and it was a pain in the ass at times, lassie seems to bring things together more simply :D
one Q tho
why if i look at an inventory, the text is 4 lines long, at first it displays normally, once it times out it goes up to the top right corner for a few seconds and disappears
bigmac- 01-12-2006
Thanks for the kind words! Lol... Sounds like the speech fields are not placed far enough off screen before they are purged. I'll have to see the graphical error to be sure, but that would be my guess based on your description.
NigeC- 01-12-2006
the text was for a note the character finds, i'm going to do it a different way.. to be honest i thought i was going to be a complete numpty (uk slang for homer simpson type person  ) at lassie, so i started off using all the "easy" options, but i don't need to thats why i'm so impressed
