Game related sounds.. Footsteps and dialogue, etc...
I added footsteps to my character last week, and even though it's somewhat disruptive and loud, I like it a whole lot better than it was before. I'm still keeping an eye out for a quieter, more appropriate footstep noise. I got the sound file off of http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/index.php if anyone is interested. After adding the footsteps, I decided to add a typing keyboard sound to the dialogue. I checked it out in game, and it doesn't seem to fit. I suppose it's because the text just pops up, instead of actually typing out like in some games. So that brings me to my question, What sort of sound can I use when a character is speaking? Voice acting is pretty much out of the question. Just wondering if you guys have any good ideas to throw out there.

You could try Banjo-and-Kazoie Style babbling depending on the feel of the game... chances are tho, its not going to fit.

Ive never played Banjo and Kazooie. I never owned an N64, but I remember the commercials. I'd go through the trouble of giving it a shot if I could get a sample of it first. It probably beats what I've got at the moment. My game is rather cartoony anyway.

Pops are always good... the kind you get by wetting your lips and popping them apart. Especially in a cartoony game, they work extremely well for content that just appears or transitions in very quickly. I recorded a bunch of SFX like that for a work project recently; they turned out great! If you're looking to record and edit your own stuff, I highly recommend the freeware app Audacity.

Audacity is perfect for that kind of work. By the way - if you use sounds from the freesound projects you can (in the sense of being allowed) to alter them - so it shouldn't be a problem to alter the footsteps in a way just like you like them. But don't forget to give the original producers from freesound credit. BTW I'm really good (means annoying) at impersonating the whole banjo kazooie cast :) my brother hates it.

I recently added footsteps too and i am having trouble getting it to sound right. The volumes are way off and i must not be adding the sound to the chars correctly because it makes the footstep sound everytime he does any action. I can't think of one cartoon in particular but i watch alot of flash cartoons and many of them use different sounds instead of voices. I bet if you spend some time watching some flash cartoons that are out there you might find something that will fit the style of your game. I will keep an eye out for examples. I have been using http://www.soundsnap.com/ I will check out freesound too.

I loved Banjo-Kazooie..... kinda want a 360 for the new one (which by the looks of the trailer, still uses the same voice effects)
