Game load / start problems on Mac OS
Hi, I have downloaded 'What Makes You Tick', but am unable to progress beyond the new game / load saved game window. On opening the WMYT_mac application, I get two 'Director Player Errors'. If I click continue, I get the new game / load game window, but no matter what I enter or click, I can't actually start a game. I'm on an iMac G5, non-Intel, running Mac OS X 10.4.9. Any tips would be greatly appreciated! I apologise in advance if this problem has already been fixed somewhere else. Thanks, gwg

That's weird.... I have a G5 Tower running 10.4.9 and it works perfectly fine. I also know that Greg (the guy behind Lassie) deveolped it on a macintosh. My first guess was Intel, but you said that it was a Non-intel mac.

I'm on a PowerBook G4 with 10.4.9 and it worked fine for me as well.

Hi, I'm having the same problem. I'm Mac OS X 10.4.9 Intel. Any idea what to do to fix it? Thanks.

This is a double post, but I can't remove it :-( (why don't we have the ability to remove our own posts?)

I heard Greg mention once that there might be problems when trying to run lassie on an Intel Mac. Maybe Greg can shed some light on the subject. But I doubt it's a Lassie problem.... most likely Flash

bigmac- 06-08-2007

No on both counts... It's not Lassie, and it's not Flash. It's Director. Director has become an incredibly archaic multimedia format, hence my efforts to update Lassie to 100% Flash. Matt was, unfortunately, an early enough developer that LassieAS did not yet exist at the time he started building it. So yeah, Director is going quickly out of style. Adobe cut Director like a gangrenous appendage during the Macromedia take-over. And sadly, I'm powerless to make it better.

Didn't they said they will release a new version of Director in 2007/8?

NigeC- 06-09-2007

could it be a languge issue?.. didn't Matt say there was problems on none default english system? or systems that use none english fonts?

bigmac- 06-10-2007

Last version of Director was MX2004, unless I am totally behind the times. Admittedly, I've stopped taking interests in Director because–even if they do update it, it's still an inferior solution (though it does still have a nice points over Flash. FileIO for one... however that's not enough to make it all-around better) My best guess concerning languages is that it may be a font issue. As in: the game requires some standard Roman characters that may not be installed on a non-English system. I'm suggesting that people try installing a cut of Geneva Western-Roman on their system and see if that helps. I'm shotting in the dark, but it MIGHT make a difference.

I have an intel based mac. English language. Can't start it either  Screenshots look nice though...

I know it would probably end up being a lot of work for Matt.... but maybe Matt should consider re-writing WMYT in AS ;-) (I'll restate the fact that it would be a lot of work, and Matt doesn't really need to ;-))

Matt Kempke- 08-15-2007

You're right. It would be a LOT of work. ... maybe SOMEday! It would be great if it would work for everyone without a problem - unfortunately it's a time / money thing ... as Greg usually likes to point out. If someone really wants to play it, then maybe they can try another PC and maybe it works there. The thing that really makes me sad is that it seems that the game won't run on Japanese/Chinese Systems at all ... since i have friends there it would have been nice. Anyway ... if someone wants to play I can still invite them to my house. LASSIE AS is better in that respect ... maybe even perfect - BUT WMYT is a child of its time ... and I love him like my own son :P

It's intriguing that people with (seemingly) the same hardware set up can load the game whilst others can't. Is there anything that can be done software-installation-wise to be able to play the game?

SeanCyrusTowel- 08-16-2007

Well, I can't help anyone out with a PowerMac.... but Intel Macs could always install Windows and Boot Camp/Parallels and try the PC version.... Or even PowerMac fans can get Virtual PC (if it's still available leagally) and run windows that way.... It shouldn't take much processing power, so it shouldn't be an issue...... But that too is just a suggestion :-D
