Flash SCUMM engine
I came across this today http://www.weremsoft.com.ar/flash-scumm/ Its open source and might interest someone, its been a while since the site was active

to bad I can't read the interface :-)

NigeC- 12-24-2007

neither can I

Nice find, thanks for posting this. I downloaded the source and checked it out... All AS2. I'm a little foggy on how you'd go about customizing something with this. It looks like you've got to manually create scumm objects on everything within a Flash layout, which would be TEDIOUS. Yikes. While the Lassie editor isn't perfect, I can't picture pulling off a full-length game as a 3rd party developer without a WYSIWYG in the equation. Hard-coded game structures are rarely useful to anyone other than the developer.

I must admit, thats what i thought seeing the source, it would be quite a task to do game.. i wont be even trying! (the whole world sighs relief)

FYI... you will have to get your hands a little dirty with code in the AS3 build of Lassie. It won't be too bad, but it will be worth the hassle I think. Biggest thing will be setting up object classes in SWF archives. Since you can finally exctract assets out of externally loaded SWF movies in AS3, Lassie will be pulling image assets out of compiled asset libs for use at run time. That will mean that you'll just have a single SWF archive of assets for each room and one for the game. Takes a bit of set up, but it is methodical and it's ungodly powerful for asset management. It will also make dynamic sound/speech management possible.

i'm looking forward to seeing it... Will we still be able to use Flash8?

bigmac- 01-01-2008

i'm looking forward to seeing it... Will we still be able to use Flash8? Nope, Flash 8 and previous is a thing of the past. The scripting language change creates a hard-divide in Flash's versioning (unlike when new versions come out that just add features). While you can use all your animations and flash media that was created in earlier versions of Flash, they will need to be compiled with CS3 to be embeded within a library archive. While I try to remain backwards compatible, my primary goal is to move the application forward... there's not much allure in creating yesterday's cutting-edge solution today. While user adaption might be slow, it will accommodate the inevitable migration of all Flash media over to AS3. It's worth it, I promise.

It's worth it, I promise I just downloaded the trial.. bugger me its a lot faster than Flash 8! all have to do is convince the purse holder i NEED to upgrade

YES! we got CS3 just in time then.

bigmac- 01-02-2008

LOL... well, I may have a few more startup developers than I think then =) Cool guys, but no new engine builds will be ready for a while still. AS3 changes everything, so the engine is undergoing a full re-code. I had been dabbling with some development back in October to work on my OOP (object-oriented programming) skills. I was building a much better and more robust application, but I was still working in AS2 (the transition between AS2 and AS3 is a bit painful). However, I have a new work project coming up this year that requires AS3, so I bit the bullet over break and decided that I HAD to finally figure it out. It was a tediously slow start, but by the end I had learned a lot and managed to convert a bunch of my last round of Lassie developments over to AS3. AS3 is a pretty darn cool and powerful language. So, as of the end of Christmas break I've finished about 95% of the interactive room application (which is kind of it's own program, then the adventure game aspects get built ontop of it). I'll probably post a working room demo when I totally finish off that system.

Nice! cant wait to actually SEE the features that I've been hearing about for a while now. Also while were still off-topic: Anybody know the difference between adobe after-effects and adobe ultra?

fatbuoy1- 01-02-2008

all have to do is convince the purse holder i NEED to upgrade Have you any student kids? Because the student editions of CS3 are FAR cheaper... and are no different to the full editions except for price

Nice! cant wait to actually SEE the features that I've been hearing about for a while now. Lol... just to stem expectations, there aren't a whole lot of visual differences save for the parallax and vertical scrolling. You can visually see those. Otherwise, everything looks pretty much the same at face value (which is how it should be!). Course, I may yet wire in one quick surprise visual before I post a demo. Should be a pretty easy development and have a pretty big wow-factor :D I look forward to getting a demo together; although as of today I'm back to work so have less hobby time and more competing projects that reduce my off-hours desire to write action script.
