crushed
Two weeks of writing and character drawing just got blown sky high  my planned project was to be a fan game based on the uk's 80's TV series The Young Ones, but i can't use the series name or character names so the Auntie Beeb (BBC) tells me In some respects, its not a bad thing.. it's better to find out now i guess, i can still use the story but the first 1/4 would need re writing, it'll be easier to achieve original characters rather than try and build ones to predetermined expectations, can also tone some parts down still gutted but what the hell, a minor glitch Goes and sulks in the frustrated game developers corner

BBC policy does not allow the use of the BBC name, or any BBC programme title/character/image etc in any way which might imply BBC endorsement of any third party's products or services i have the details to try and get permission but IF they said yes, which is doubtful, there would be so much red tape to wade throught it seems hardly worth the trouble. its a bummer but, at least i didn't just go ahead and hope for the best, i know of a few people who've and copyright run ins and lost a load of hard work the crazy thing is the first 4 episodes are on You Tube illegally

Two words Nige: derivative influence. Change the names and spin the story in a different direction. Make it a parody... at least in US copyright laws, parody is exempt from copyright clauses assuming the source reference is obvious and your take on it is obviously different. Hance Saturday Nght Live's success =)

Hance Saturday Nght Live's success =) thanks Geg.. thats what i intend to do, i have 4 replacement characters that i can draw, and i might throw me in somewhere, the goal of the game will have to change but i'll think of something it'll be a lot easier to keep a story going with characters that aren't know, than try and recreate existing ones, at least 2 of the TYO's characters would of been hard work to get anywhere close Right i'm off to draw some VW baywindow camper's and throw one of a cliff lol.. if you've every worked on one you'd understand why that would give great pleasure

yeah! don't let them crush your game ... motivation-wise actually it's even better if it's just loosely based on something that inspired you ... that means you're free in everything you do!

theres a part of me that says" just do it!" and hope no one from the BBC sees it, if it was any other engine i wouldn't of thought twice, but flash is a bit more public domain Or beg and plead my case which i do have the option, but i doubt they would take me seriously, I'm hardly a multi media professional and i don't have a clue how to approach them I'm torn about making a demo or do screen shots to help argue the case the most annoying thing at the moment is I've got a guy willing to do the TYO characters, a guy who can do the voices and a band to do the flippin music lol i really want to do it, plan B is ok but the whole plot just isn't working at the moment

Well even if their reaction was bad, it could still bring a bit more publicity to LASSIE, which is always a good thing, right?

Well even if their reaction was bad, it could still bring a bit more publicity to LASSIE, which is always a good thing, right? i've decided to approach the BBC again, armed with screen shots, storyboard and/or a short demo any advice on the best way to tackle large companies would be very miuch appreciated i actually thought about pushing the game toward the UK's Comic Relief that is held every year and try to use it for raising funds for charity (it would give me just under a year to make it).. i dunno just a thought lol

i actually thought about pushing the game toward the UK's Comic Relief that is held every year and try to use it for raising funds for charity (it would give me just under a year to make it).. i dunno just a thought lol Yeah, good spin. Big organizations are a lot more likely to take you seriously when you have an established mission behind your motive. Spinning it as simply a "personal project" will likely get you ignored or yawned at. They have better things to do than fret about Joe Game Developer building fan games in his basement, of course that doesn't protect you from a lawsuit later. So yeah, weight it toward an established mission. Makes you more legit, and publicity in association with charity is always favorable.
